ABSTRACT

Background: During pregnancy, the pregnant lady undergoes significant anatomical and physiological changes in order to nurture and accommodate the developing fetus. These changes begin after conception and affect every organ system in the body.Methods: The study was carried out in the United Arab Emirates - Ajman (Thumbay Hospital) during the period of (March - Jun) in the year of 2018 to estimate HbA1c% levels, hematological blood parameters and urine culture in healthy pregnant women during 3rd trimester. The study was conducted on (108) healthy pregnant women during3rd trimester. Urine culture was performed to detect the growth of bacteria after the culture, gram stain was done to differentiate the bacteria followed by biochemical test to detect the type of bacteria.Results: A total 26 (79%) of patients had normal HbA1c% result while 7(21%) had elevated HbA1c% result. The results of HbA1c% in last trimester mean±SD (range) HbA1c% (n=33) were 5.5±0.52% (111.5±14.8 mg/dL). Also, our results showed strong positive correlation between HbA1% with estimated Average blood glucose (r=0.78, P value=0.00), and weak positive correlation between HbA1 with age (years) (r=0.2, P value=0.02). Bacterial culture showed that two positive results of stenotrophomonas maltophilia was isolated, three cases of Staphylococcus aureus was isolated and three cases of staphylococcus saprophyticus. Hematological profile showed a clinically significant (≤ 0.05) in Hb mean 11.47, P value 0.001, HCT mean, 33.9 P value 0.001 and MCV mean 73.7 value 0.001. No clinically significant (≥ 0.05) in RBCs mean 3.93, P value 0.010, MCH mean 27.3 P value 0.061 and MCHC mean 30.9 P value 0.134.Conclusions: Our study conclude that estimation of HbA1c%, hematological blood parameters and urine culture level in last trimester will be helpful in diagnosis, monitoring and predicting fetal distress.

ABSTRACT

Chemical profile of the Agaricus bisporus samples were analyzed using GC/MS method in ethanolic extracts. A total of 174 metabolic products were detected, which included 13 significant metabolites between 1.2 to 83 % (w/w); other 13 metabolites at 1% (w/w) and 148 metabolites less than 1% classified into 12 categories. These metabolites had many medicinal activities, which included anti-cancer, anti-cardiovascular diseases, anti-hypercholesterol, anti-microbial, hepatoprotective, human health supporting and immune enhancer. HPLC analysis of water extracts of the A. bisporus samples showed that the spores and gills in the fresh adult mushroom had higher percentage of agaritine mycotoxin than the other parts. These contents were decreased by different treatments especially by boiling, preservation and cooking. The selenium contents (ppb) was measured by Galvanometric analysis and highest content was recorded in fresh whole mushroom sample (0.97) followed by cooked preserved (0.4) and fried sample (0.11).

ABSTRACT

Background: Infrared (IR) radiation is becoming more popular in industrial manufacturing processes and in many instruments used for diagnostic and therapeutic application to the human eye. Aim: The present study was designed to investigate the effect of IR radiation on rabbit’s crystalline lens and lens membrane. Materials and Methods: Fifteen New Zealand rabbits were used in the present work. The rabbits were classified into three groups; one of them served as control. The other two groups were exposed to IR radiation for 5 or 10 minutes. Animals from these two irradiated groups were subdivided into two subgroups; one of them was decapitated directly after IR exposure, while the other subgroup was decapitated 1 hour post exposure. IR was delivered from a General Electric Lamp model 250R 50/10, placed 20 cm from the rabbit and aimed at each eye. The activity of Na+-K+ ATPase was measured in the lens membrane. Soluble lens proteins were extracted and the following measurements were carried out: estimation of total soluble protein, sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. For comparison between multiple groups, analysis of variance was used with significance level set at P < 0.001. Results: The results indicated a change in the molecular weight of different lens crystalline accompanied with changes in protein backbone structure. These changes increased for the groups exposed to IR for 10 minutes. Moreover, the activity of Na+-K+ ATPase significantly decreased for all groups. Conclusions: The protein of eye lens is very sensitive to IR radiation which is hazardous and may lead to cataract.
